Welcome to Wayra - Spirit of Wind, a platform where you can find ethically sourced and handmade musical instruments and shamanic handicrafts that directly support indigenous communities.
I would like to invite you on a journey from the depths of the Amazon Jungle through to the peaks of the Andean mountains.
My name is Anja and the time I spent living and travelling in South America had a huge impact on my life. I explored this magical continent for the first time nine years ago and then went back two years ago to dive deeper into the magic that I encountered there. It opened me up to a whole new world of music, rhythms, cultures, traditions and instruments. An infinite variety of melodies can be heard whistling from the Andean mountains through Quenas, Zamponas and Antaras, while the Amazonic music tickles ancestral memories with its high pitched Pincullos and shamanic flutes.
One night in ceremony, as I was drifting off into the space of dreams, a flute began to sing the sweetest melody all birds combined could ever sing, it enveloped my body in pure love, a ray of light shot through my consciousness and opened my heart, flowers, humming birds and butterflies blossoming out of my soul. Its sound was so beautiful that it seemed out of this world. I looked up to see the flute and this is where the Quena, the flute that would guide me into the world of music, came into my life.
From this day onwards my interest in traditional Andean and Amazonian music grew and I began to meet wonderful musicians and incredibly talented flute makers. I was fascinated with the variety in different wind instruments, a different flute could be discovered in almost every region. Soon, my travel backpack had to shed some clothes to make space for all different kinds of flutes. I soon started to get requests from friends asking to bring certain flutes back home to Europe, and this is where the idea for my shop began to arise.
As I continued my travel, I spent many months living and working in indigenous communities. In Pucallpa, Peru, the universe introduced me to a lovely family of shamans from the Shipibo tribe. I spent 6 months living with them and working as a translator and facilitator in their healing retreat center. I learnt a lot about their culture and traditions and developed a huge respect and love for this wonderful tribe. They asked me to sell their handicrafts back at home so that they could continue working with what they love and have freedom and independence from modern society. Creating and selling their handicrafts enables them to pursue their indigenous traditions and make a good living from home.
All of the hand-embroidered altar cloths and patches, as well as the sacred Huayruro seed necklaces and Shipibo bracelets available in my shop are made by this family. We work together in friendship and love. I pay them a far higher than average price for their handicrafts to make sure that they are supported and receive a good income from the products that I sell in my shop. Especially since the beginning of 2020 I have made sure to be there for them even more and help them financially to get through these difficult times. They work with so much love and care and you can really feel the high energy of the items they make.
Luis, one of the shamans of the family, has an amazing project which he has been developping for years and which is partly being funded by the sales made here in my shop WayraSpiritofWind. He is planning a Shipibo boarding school where children from the Shipibo Tribe can come and learn about the Shipibo traditions, continue speaking the Shipibo language, learn how to spear fish, grow traditional fruit and vegetables. learn from the elders about old ancient medicine plant wisdom and many many more fantastic projects will come to life. This project is intended to keep the Shipibo culture alive with all of its precious traditions and the rich culture that it is. If you have more questions or would like to support feel free to send me a message.
Another strong and beautiful connection I have in South America is with a family of musicians and shamans from the Putumayo Region of Colombia. Some of you may know the band Grupo Putumayo, they make incredibly beautiful healing music with all kinds of native instruments from both the Andean and the Amazon Region. Three of the members of Grupo Putumayo are close friends of mine and are part of the indigenous Kamentsa culture. They and their family members create the colorful beaded jewelry, the maracas and the shamanic overtone flutes available in my shop. They are like family to me and we help and support each other wherever we can. All of the Kamentsa items sold in my shop help to support their project to create a healing retreat centre in Putumayo where they can continue working with their medicinal healing plants and live in harmony with their traditions and culture.
And then there are the native flutes, quenas, spirit animal flutes and different kinds of panpipes that you will find in my shop, which are made by an outstanding flute maker from the Andean Region of Peru. His craftsmanship is meticulous and his flutes were by far the best that I found throughout my entire time in South America. He has a kind heart and he even taught me how to make a Quena flute when I was there. Many of his flutes are tuned in the healing frequency 432 hertz.
The hand-painted flutes are also a highlight of my shop. These flutes are magnificently painted with different animals and spirits of the jungle such as jaguars, humming birds and frogs. They are fairly easy to play as they are tuned pentatonically, meaning they only have 5 holes and all notes sound harmonious together. This makes them suitable for beginners. These flutes are brought to us by Killasia, a wonderful lady from the Peruvian jungle who has the most beautiful soul and she is able to support herself and her family through sharing her handicrafts with the world.
I am also happy to be able to provide you with the most delicious and heart-opening Ceremonial Grade Cacao that I have come across. Thanks to my friend Laura, a lovely lady that holds Cacao ceremonies and spent a long time living in a Cacao community in Guatemala, I am able to offer Keith´s Cacao in my shop. 1 pound blocks of pure joy, that can help us on our way to enhanced insight, presence, focus and wellbeing. This Cacao is ethically sourced and provides work for many indigenous women in Guatemala. For more information please go to the Cacao product page.
I hope you enjoyed this little insight into how my shop “Wayra – Spirit of Wind” came into this world. As you now know, all the items you will find in my shop have been carefully selected and come from real and direct connections with our indigenous brothers and sisters in South America. Connecting cultures through love and respect.
Thank you for your support.
With all my love
Anja
The name „Wayra – Spirit of Wind“ and where it comes from
Wayra – Wind in Quechua, an ancient language of the Andean Region of South America.
For ancient Peruvians the term wind (Wayra), was not solely connected to the physical phenomenon, but also referred to the flow of the forces or energies that make up life, which manifests itself as the harmony or supreme balance of the forces of the cosmos. For that same reason, even in traditional Peruvian medicine, the shamans and healers speak of the winds of the above and the below, of the past winds and of the future winds, as the cause of the disease (or imbalance). They invoke the Wayras to restore health or vital balance. The whole medical tradition of the ancient Peruvians was aimed at maintaining the balance of the four winds (tawa wayra) of life, as in this way each human being can ensure inner peace. (as does the cosmos and each of its elements) . It allows humans to get into dialogue with the Noqa Kani Kani, Entelequia or Vital Energy and its manifestations in each one of the worlds: in the one above and in the one below, in the masculine one and in the feminine one, where life flows just like the winds do.
